The 81st Venice Film Festival 2024 is set to be an exciting showcase of some of the most anticipated films of the year. Known for its prestigious reputation and diverse selection, this year’s festival lineup includes a mix of big-name directors, star-studded casts, and emerging talent. Here are some of the standout films to watch at this year’s festival:
“Maria” is one of the most highly anticipated films of the festival, directed by Pablo Larraín and starring Angelina Jolie as the iconic opera singer Maria Callas. The film explores the tumultuous life and career of Callas, offering a glimpse into her world of fame, passion, and personal struggles. Larraín’s distinct storytelling and Jolie’s transformative performance make this a must-see. As a fun of Angelina Jolie and Maria Callas, “Maria” is my favorite film so far, that’s why I made a special post before.
“Beetlejuice 2” is the long-awaited sequel to Tim Burton’s 1988 cult classic. Directed by Burton, the film reunites Michael Keaton as the mischievous ghostly bio-exorcist and Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz. This time, Beetlejuice returns to stir up more chaos in the afterlife, now involving Lydia’s daughter, played by Jenna Ortega. With Burton’s signature blend of dark humor and imaginative visuals, “Beetlejuice 2” promises to deliver another entertainingly bizarre adventure.
“Babygirl” is a gripping drama directed by A.V. Rockwell, following the story of a young woman named Yasmin, who navigates the challenges of life in a tough urban environment. As she struggles to break free from her difficult circumstances, Yasmin encounters various obstacles that test her resilience and determination. The film explores themes of identity, ambition, and the quest for personal freedom, offering a raw and emotional portrayal of a young woman’s journey towards self-discovery and empowerment.
“The Room Next Door”is a suspenseful thriller directed by Michael Spierig and Peter Spierig. The film centers on a mysterious and unsettling situation that unfolds in an upscale apartment building. When a new tenant moves into the unit next door, strange and disturbing events begin to unravel, leading to a tense and chilling exploration of paranoia and hidden secrets. As tensions rise, the film delves into themes of trust, isolation, and the dark side of human nature, keeping audiences on edge until the final reveal.
“Queer” is a bold and thought-provoking film directed by Joe Mantello that explores the complexities of identity and love within the LGBTQ+ community. Set in a vibrant urban environment, the film weaves together the stories of diverse characters as they navigate their personal struggles, relationships, and societal challenges. Through its compelling narrative and rich character development, “Queer” provides a poignant look at the search for acceptance and self-discovery in a world of evolving norms and expectations.
“Battlefield” is an intense war drama directed by Peter Berg, focusing on the brutal realities of modern combat. Set against the backdrop of a high-stakes military conflict, the film follows a diverse group of soldiers as they navigate the chaos of battle, face moral dilemmas, and confront the harsh consequences of war. With its gripping narrative and realistic portrayal of warfare, “Battlefield” offers a powerful exploration of courage, camaraderie, and the human cost of conflict.
“The Brutalist” is a dramatic film directed by Brady Corbet that delves into the life of a visionary architect who escapes from Europe after World War II and starts anew in America. The film spans several decades and explores themes of ambition, identity, and the pursuit of artistic expression in a post-war world. With an ensemble cast featuring Joel Edgerton and Marion Cotillard, “The Brutalist” is a compelling exploration of the struggles and triumphs of a man trying to leave a mark on the world while grappling with his personal and cultural legacy.
“Joker Folie à Deux” is the much-anticipated sequel to the 2019 film “Joker,” directed by Todd Phillips. The film continues to explore the life of Arthur Fleck, played by Joaquin Phoenix, who won an Academy Award for his portrayal of the disturbed character. This time, Arthur is joined by Harley Quinn, portrayed by Lady Gaga, as they navigate the twisted world of Gotham City. Blending psychological drama with musical elements, “Joker: Folie à Deux” promises to delve deeper into the chaotic minds of its characters and the dark corners of their world.
